I started reading “Our Song” around Christmas time and mostly in the train on my way to and from work.
Maybe that’s why I found it a bit confusing at the beginning. I had a hard time remembering who is who and connecting properly with the characters and the story.
Once I familiarised myself with Ally and Charlotte, Joe and David and also little Jake I can tell you that I was completely captivated.
Dani Atkins wrote this book so brilliantly. I could see myself wondering around the hospital corridors, I could feel Ally’s frustration back when she was studying and experiencing her first love. I connected with her and I also judged her for being so immature at times. I could also relate to Charlotte, feeling her frustrations and insecurities.
“Our Song” connects four people throughout their entire lives. Destiny plays a big part in Dani’s story. It’s a gripping and emotional family drama that will most definitely capture your heart for a while if not forever.
Friendship, serendipity and love are what this book has to offer.
As a book club pick the main conversations will go around few questions:
- What would you do if your husband was the love of somebody else’s life?
- When faced with an agonising decision, could you put the past behind you and do the right thing?
- Who do you love most: Joe or David?
- Do you agree with Charlotte’s decision of not informing David about his child?
As “Our Song” was the actual book club pick at our last meeting we also discussed about the cheesy ending. Yes, I find it too cheesy.
As a book, I am all in but thinking of the actual story I thought: “what are the chances of events going down that road?” I can say that maybe one in an infinite. And everyone agreed with this but we all had to admit that we shed a few tears for the grand finale.
The scene where little Jake is saying his goodbyes to his father made me cry like a baby. As a mother, this impressed me so much and it moved me thinking about how strong, innocent and pure hearted children are.
Overall I do recommend “Our Song” and I can assure you that I will most definitely read Dani Atkins other books.
